According to the Foundation Charter, the Carlsberg Foundation funds shall exclusively support basic research in the fields of natural science, social science and humanities. The Board will assess on an individual basis whether a proposed project falls into "basic research" category.

Support for research infrastructure can only be applied for through the instrument “The Carlsberg Foundation’s Distinguished Associate Professor Fellowships”, aimed at supporting outstanding newly appointed associate professors for the establishment of an independent research group or environment, including the acquisition of research infrastructure and the formation of national/international networks.

There can only be one main applicant. Include a resume and list of publication for the main applicant and a short resume (maximum 2 A4 pages) and a short list of publication for the other applicants.

The Carlsberg Foundation works to promote mobility and the internationalisation of Danish universities. The Carlsberg Foundation believes that in many areas it is difficult to obtain a permanent associate professor position at the Danish universities, unless you have international experience. The Carlsberg Foundation works to help recently graduated PhD students to go on postdoctoral stays at foreign elite universities. The chances of a newly graduated PhD to be awarded a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the same university and in the same group, in which he or she gained the PhD, are considerably smaller.

You must apply for the whole period even though the foundation only grants funding one year at a time.

If you have already been granted funding for the first year of the project, the foundation usually supports the second and, in some cases, the third year of the project. The precondition for support for the second and, possibly, third year is an account of expected progress of the project. You must apply for the following year by the next deadline. The Carlsberg Foundation expects co-financing from the hosting institution for the second and third year.

Yes, please read the “application guidelines”.

There is no defined limit or minimum of the extent or degree of association to Denmark and the Danish research environment. The Carlsberg Foundation Board will determine the degree of attachment on an individual basis.

The Carlsberg Foundation Internationalisation Fellowships are granted as fixed rates (DKK 350,000 per year, if the grant holder is travelling without children and DKK 425,000 per year, if the grant holder is travelling with children). We expect that the hosting institution will cover the operating costs, and only in exceptional cases are operating costs granted.

Please see the international university rankings, for example: Times Higher Education World University Ranking, Shanghai Ranking (ARWU) and CWTS Leiden Ranking.

There are no requirements for co-financing. For Internationalisation Fellowships the Carlsberg Foundation generally expects co-financing from the hosting institution after the first year. Co-financing could for example be subsidies for salaries, equipment, or other.

For 2016 it is not possible to apply for the same type of Semper Ardens research projects as in 2015. This year the Carlsberg Foundation offers a new fellowship where the term “Semper Ardens” is mentioned. However, this covers a one-year fellowship for leading, established researchers with a project aimed at producing a groundbreaking monograph within the humanities and social sciences.
